The 3rd Annual Ashe County Armed Forces Tribute needs volunteers! Coordinated & hosted by community volunteers, the VFW, American Legion, DAV & the 501c3 Jeffersons Rotary Club Foundation, this Tribute seeks to recognize, respect and honor all branches of the Armed Forces. Why? Because we are Americans. Can you give 4 hours a week to staff the all-volunteer office at 303A East 2nd St in West Jefferson, next door to the Chamber of Commerce? Can you help in any way? Attached is a list of many ways you can help in this non-political show of appreciation, by giving of your time, talents, and financial support as we say THANK YOU to Veterans and Active Duty Military. 336.846.1251. Gov. Easley has signed a Proclaimation observing this Tribute to Patriots, and UNC-TV has scheduled a LIVE broadcast 10:30-12:00 of the event August 23. Jaime Lynn will parachute in with a 2000sf American Flag, Stephen Shoemaker has designed a commemorative Pictorial Postmark, The Piece Makers Quilt Guild & community quilters are creating original Christmas stockings for active duty military, Smokey Mountain BBQ is catering the lunch, a flyover from Seymour Johnson is planned, churches are recognizing their members of the miltary, a Wall Of Honor will display Veterans, Active Duty & Reservists whose biographical information is submitted, a special commemorative newspaper will be published listing the biographies and photos as well as all the scheduled events, and LIVE satellite communications via DVIDS will be held with deployed units in Afghanistan and Iraq who have NC members in their units, WWII veterans will be recognized, special thanks will be given to the 1450th and 1451st National Guard Units from Boone and Jefferson, the Museum of Ashe County History will have a special display, a juried art exhibition is open to all artists and will be on display in Jefferson Station by the Library for People's Choice voting, local musicians and organizations will have displays of support, Off the Wall from Charlotte is providing inflatables for the kids, and much more! Trail Work Day

Ever wondered what it takes to build a hiking trail? Well here is a great way to learn and get your hands dirty helping to build a hiking trial that will be here forever. Elk Knob is currently building a hiking trail to the summit and needs your help. No experience is needed. Rangers will be there to work with you and to answer any questions. Activities could include any of the following...clearing brush and topsoil in trail path, creating tread, building rock wall, graveling tread, and more.

New River Trail 50k run
